Background
The J.K. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History is a landmark cultural facility in Lagos dedicated to preserving and showcasing Yoruba heritage. The Centre welcomes a wide range of visitors, including tourists, researchers, students, and local communities. Ensuring accessibility and smooth movement throughout the multi-level space is essential.
Challenge
The building posed significant vertical mobility challenges due to its architectural constraints:
Inside the museum: No elevator shaft, no overhead clearance, and no pit.
Outdoor area: Installation without a shaft, overhead, or pit, and full exposure to weather.
A key requirement was to provide safe, accessible transport for handicapped or mobility-challenged visitors.
Solution Provided by JMG
JMG supplied and installed TK Elevator (TKE) products as a fully inclusive mobility solution tailored to the site’s complex architectural constraints:
1 Velino Escalator to facilitate continuous movement between high-traffic floors.
1 H-100 Home Elevator as inside the museum: Installed without a shaft, overhead, or pit, and adapted to a single-phase power supply for energy efficiency.
1 H-200 Home Elevator outside the museum: Installed in an open-air location using a hydraulic system with low power consumption, waterproof design, and no need for a shaft or pit — perfectly suited for outdoor and space-restricted environments.
1 Evolution Elevator, a robust commercial lift designed to handle high-capacity transport efficiently.
Highlighting Innovation
A major highlight of this project was the use of the TK Elevator H-Series model. One of its unique selling points is that it does not require a pre-constructed shaft or pit, making it the ideal solution for structurally challenging sites like this one. This enabled smooth installation without major civil modifications.
Impact
The installations significantly improved accessibility and mobility within and around the museum. The custom elevator configurations overcame structural limitations, providing reliable vertical access—especially for visitors with mobility challenges. The energy-efficient, compact solutions also reduced operational demands.

By adapting to complex site requirements and prioritizing accessibility, JMG’s vertical mobility solutions have made the J.K. Randle Centre a more inclusive space, welcoming all guests — including those with physical challenges — to experience Yoruba culture without barriers.
